Abstract

When Brazil declared war to Germany in October 1917, motivated by the sinkings of her merchant ships on european waters, all the military efforts were represented by the Brazilian Navy. At that time the Navy had few warships in satisfactory conditions, with a serious logistic limitation. Such situation had been aggravated since the Armada Revolt in 1893 and the Sailor´s Revolt in 1910 just after Brazil incorporated new Alexandrino Program warships, although without conditions to maintain them in good operational status. What will be discussed in this paper is the material conditions of those warships and the effective naval logistical capacity at the end of 1917, coming to the conclusion that the Navy was unprepared to face the German naval forces at sea in case of necessity.
