Abstract
This paper analyzes the ambivalence of the representation of nature, specially the sea in the short story Two Cases of the Nautical Life, by Ivan Aleksandrovich Gontcharóv (1812-1891). We started with a brief explanation of the grand tour in XVIII century Europe, which brings a new color to the travelogue, and clarified some Russian peculiarities of this phenome-na and of the literary genre. Then we explored the meaning of travels to the east in Russian culture, and the insertion of the short-story in the Russian literary tradition, as well as the author’s works.
