Abstract
In the nineteenth century, Brazil experienced a large presence of foreigners in its territory. One of those foreigners was the American Methodist Reverend Daniel Parish Kidder. This traveler wrote reports containing his views on this territory and its inhabitants. This article seeks to understand the maritime history from the analysis of arguments and experiences of this foreign Protestant regarding his views on the consumption of alcoholic beverages, which through his writings built an extensive collection of alterity relations with Brazil.
