A The typology of the Portuguese Frigate in the 17th century
Interrogations and proposals
Abstract
In the 17th century Portuguese international presence is challenged in all its theaters of operation. The archaeological site of the Santo António de Tanná, a frigate built in India and sank in Kenya in 1697, may represent a morphological constructive response to military and technical challenges of this negative context. This study revealed several peculiarities that indicate a technological answer to the changing political-military scenario in the region of the Indian Ocean. The study of this deposit raises questions about the path traveled by the Portuguese Frigate and shows the Portuguese capacity towards innovation. Which may have been a factor for the continuity of the Portuguese presence in India.
