Abstract

In this work, we submit the transformations that took place in the Imperial Navy in the middle of the 19th century, highlighting the creation of the Seaman Corps and the Sailors School, to the eradication thesis defended by Edmundo Campos Coelho. In the thesis originally published in 1976 in the book Em busca da identidade: O Exército e a política na sociedade brasileira, the author maintains that there was an aggressive action by Imperial politics whose objective was the reduction of Army personnel at certain moments during the course of Imperial period reaching the first moments of the Republic.
