the Brazilian military thought after the Paraguay War
Abstract
One throughout history, large-scale conflicts have produced substantial changes and transformations in society and military institutions, acting as vectors for the modification of war technology, strategy, tactics, the art of war and military thinking. The Paraguay War (1864-1870) was the largest conflict ever in South America and forced the Brazilian Empire to transform its small and unprepared army into a large force capable of defeating the Paraguayan forces of Solano López. Besides the transformation occurred in the army and in society, the war promoted a modification in Brazilian military thinking. The aim of this article is to analyze the changes that occurred in the Brazilian Army after the War of Paraguay in the 1880s, through the writings published in Revista do Exército Brasileiro, a periodical created by a group of officers in 1882 as a discussion space of various themes inherent to their functions and other issues of national interest.
