Abstract

The Humaitá Fortress was the most important military engineering work of the Republic of Paraguay in the López Period (1841-1870). Although since the time of Doctor Jose Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, in the period of Independence (1811-1840), there had already been a river guard, such a guard was modest and its construction materialized only after the serious diplomatic conflict with the Empire which led to the expedition of Admiral Pedro Ferreira de Oliveira (1854-1855) and another international impasse, in this case with the United States, after the incident with the Water Witch. During the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), the Humaitá Fortress in the Paraguayan Quadrangle was the vital center of the Paraguayan defense and around which most of the war broke out during the Humaitá Campaign (1866- 1868).
