Abstract
In November 1807, French troops crossed the border from Portugal to Spain and advanced towards Lisbon. Prince D. João, who had ruled the Portuguese kingdom since 1792, when his mother D. Maria I was declared mad, decided within a few days to transfer the Court to Brazil. From 25 to 27 November 1807, about 15 thousand people boarded Portuguese ships en route to Brazil, under the protection of the English fleet.
