A The first squadron of the Navy
From the twilight with the United Kingdom of Portugal to the dawn with the new Empire of Brazil 1820-1823
Abstract
In 1820, with the progression of the political situation promoted by the courts in Lisbon, being increasingly favorable to the recolonization of Brazil, and with the monarchy established in the country, the military apparatus supporting the Portuguese colonial empire in South America was progressively divided. This article intends to present a general picture of the Navy, whose structure and devices were deployed between Portugal and Brazil. During the process following the declaration of independence that took place in September 1822, the constitution of the Brazilian Navy would face some challenges, the construction of naval resources, the constitution of its crews, its officer corps with the purpose of the subsequent war. Between 1820 and 1823, the new country's Navy would undergo a transition that would result in the creation of a relatively prepared force that would help consolidate Brazil's independence, especially in the north of the nascent empire, whose model would inspire an entire generation in the larger project of strengthening the Imperial State.
