Notas sobre a expedição da marinha norte-americana ao Paraguai e o exercício de diplomacia militar 1858-1859
Abstract
In February 1855, under the auspices of a dictatorial policy of the Paraguayan president Carlos Antonio López, Paraguayan forces fort Itapiru opened fire on the US ship Water Witch and her crew, sailing in scientific mission on the Parana River. The consequences of this disagreement led to the US Government under President James Buchanan sent in 1858 endings with approval of the Congress, a naval mission to force the Paraguayan government to compensation and an apology, and as well as, require the ratification of a treaty of free navigation and trade with the US. This article shows how to set this process. Among the sources used are: Commander Page's report, James Buchanan's documents, diplomatic documentation and Paraguayan bibliography on the dissent.
