Abstract

This article has as its theme the political rise of José Antônio Correia da Câmara, General Câmara and Visconde de Pelotas, after his return from the Paraguayan War. To this end, we selected three conjunctures of the General's activity: the first, shortly after his return from Paraguay and the granting of his title of nobility; the second, when he became an important political leader in the Province of Rio Grande do Sul; and the third, when, in the early 1880s, Visconde de Pelotas assumed, in Rio de Janeiro, as senator and minister of war of the Empire of Brazil.
