Abstract

This paper aims to understand the relationship between the Portuguese empire and the pathways of the sea, pointing out the advantages and challenges of the management of a maritime monopoly. We seek to understand how the legacies of this Portuguese tradition were bequeathed to the Brazilian Empire and how this region dealt with the new 19th century maritime dynamics.
