Abstract

In the 1630s the Dutch were expanding their territories in the South Atlantic, usurping Portuguese trade and territories. In this critical situation, Luiz Álvares Barriga wrote an “impertinent ordain”, where he proposes the administration of Philip III, his strategic and economic thoughts to stop the Dutch advance. This work will analyze those ideas and will place them in the context of their production.
