Abstract

The use of animals for educational and scientific purposes has always been a subject of discussion by both the general public and the scientific community. Philosophical lines against and in favor of the use arose while science evolved by exploiting the relationship between human beings /animals. In order to control the use of animals for research and teaching in Brazil, the federal law 11,974 was established in the 2008, based on Ethics and Animal Welfare. The following text briefly presents the evolution of thought and practice in the use of animals in experimentation and the adequacy of the Institute of Biomedical Research of the Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias (HNMD) to the current regulations.
