Abstract

The consumption of psychoactive substances accompanies the evolution and the historical-cultural trajectories of societies and constitutes a biological, psychological and sociocultural fact, which can result in a problematic pattern of use. Research has revealed the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs by military personnel, as well as associations with work situations, such as combat periods and traumatic experiences. The aim of the study was to evaluate the evidence available in the literature on drug use by the military personnel. A literature search was carried out in June 2020 in the information sources MEDLINE / PubMed, Pubmed Central (PMC) and Scopus with the terms “Substance-Related Disorders” and “Military Personnel”. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 56 publications were analyzed. The main fi ndings were: the additive association of factors inherent to the career with the use of substances by military personnel; the correlation between substance abuse and traumatic brain injury, as well as with general mental health diagnoses; and scientifi c, preventive and therapeutic eff orts by corporations to address the problem. Little national representativeness was identifi ed, with only a single Brazilian study.
