Keywords:
Brazilian southern frontiers, Prata river, iberian diplomacyAbstract
This work aims to discuss the constitution of the Brazilian southern frontiers, during the period ranging from the signing of the Treaty of Alcaçovas-Toledos (1479) to that of the Treaty of Madrid (1750). It will be explained how the region of the Prata river became the object of the first quarrels in America among subjects of both Iberian countries, and how centuries of continuous conflicts caused to emerge an Iberian history in Brazil, a country that at first sight would have an exclusively Portuguese one.
