RENEWAL AND IMPROVEMENTS OF THE NATIONAL NAVY (1873-1876)
Keywords:
Steamers – Regeneration – Guzmancism – National Navy.Abstract
Renew existing floating sail units; improve naval stations; create a nautical school; implement a shipyard dock project in Puerto Cabello; build captaincies and lighthouses; perform bar dredging; establish a port police; among other transformations that would benefit maritime, river and lake navigation. In this sense, the acquisition of armed war steamers was not only necessary but also opportune to dominate and defend a wide spectrum of the coast from possible invasions, the blockade of ports, the smuggling of weapons to enemy sides and the mobilization of infantry troops at high speed to repel the opposition forces that threaten to break the established peace project, however, the greatest contribution during the Regeneration of Guzmán Blanco (1873-1876), was the incorporation of the engine steam and iron for the consolidation of a Navy, which represented a milestone in Venezuelan Naval History.
