Abstract

In this article I intend to analyze the trajectory of Antônio Luís von Hoonholtz, Baron of Teffé, from the period of his training at the Naval Academy (AM), through his participation in the Paraguayan War, to the creation of the Hydrographic Department of the Navy (RHN), of which he was the first director and remained at the head for 14 years. This information highlights the importance of the Baron of Teffé in the defense of national science, especially in the field of hydrography during the second half of the 19th century, which focused on surveying the hydrographic basins, rivers and navigable lakes of Brazilian territory.
