From the intertextual waters of the Atlantic

literary dialogues between Brazil, Portugal and Africa

Abstract

This article investigates the intertextual relationships that create literary dialogues across the Atlantic Ocean, linking Brazil, Portugal, and Africa. First, we analyze the concept of intertextuality based on Linda Hutcheon (1991), Mikhail Bakhtin (2010), and Julia Kristeva (2012). Next, we explore how intertextuality serves to honor original texts while revealing cultural and literary legacies in new writings. To illustrate this, we examine works by authors such as Guinea-Bissau’s Tony Tcheka, Angola’s Maurício Gomes and José Eduardo Agualusa, Cape Verde’s Baltasar Lopes and Ovídio Martins, Brazil’s Manuel Bandeira, and Portugal’s Luís de Camões and Eça de Queirós.
